Kiprun Kipstorm Elite Review | A Carbon Plated Racer that Makes Fast Feel Approachable

The first time I ran in the KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite, I could tell right away they were built for speed. They felt firm but bouncy, and gave me that race-day energy from the first few strides.
Kiprun, Decathlon’s French-born running footwear brand, is officially making its debut in the U.S in April 2026. The Kipstorm Elite is a carbon-plated racing shoe designed for runners who want something aggressive, responsive, and competitive with the big-name super shoes. Kiprun has been quietly building a strong performance line, and this shoe feels like a statement piece in the race-day category.
This is a completely honest, unpaid review. These thoughts are based on my own runs and my own experience, not what a brand says the shoe should feel like. Every runner is different, so consider testing it out for yourself.
I’ll be breaking down how the shoe fits, how it feels during speed work, how stable it is compared to other carbon shoes, and whether I’d trust it for a marathon. My goal is to give you a real-world look at whether this shoe actually performs the way runners hope it will.
If you’re looking for a fast shoe that still feels comfortable and race-ready, the Kipstorm Elite is definitely worth talking about.

- Wide Feet: It depends. Due to a slightly roomy toe box, a wide foot might work in this racer.
- Heavier Runners: Good for runners with good form and strength. Lighter, efficient runners will get more out of the carbon plate energy return.
- Long Runs: Good for tempo runs and race pace workouts. It’s build for the half-marathon and marathon distances.
- Front of the Pack: Yes, it’s built for fast workouts and racing, with a carbon plate and propulsive foam runners holding a faster pace (roughly < 7:30/mile) will reap the benefits
KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite Overview
The KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite is Kiprun’s take on a true carbon-plated race shoe, designed to compete with the big names in the super shoe category. It’s sleek, responsive, and clearly made for runners who want to feel fast and efficient when it matters most.
The big question is: can Kiprun hold its own in the super shoe world next to models like the Alphafly and Vaporfly? I put the KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite to the test to find out.
The KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite feels like a true race shoe that still manages to be approachable. My first impression was how fast it felt without being unstable.
It has that firm, bouncy ride you want from a carbon-plated shoe, but with a little more control than some of the super shoes out there. I used it for two harder workouts that included threshold work, 800s, and 200s, and it really shined when the pace picked up.
If you’re familiar with shoes like the Alphafly or Vaporfly, I’d put this in the same performance category, but with a more stable, grounded feel.
The Kipstorm Elite still feels fast and propulsive, but I felt more confident on turns and less “wobbly” than I sometimes do in the Alphafly. The upper portion of the shoe feels a lot like the Vaporfly (similar laces and gusseted tongue).
What people really need to know is this: it’s a legit race-day shoe that delivers speed, efficiency, and stability all in one, which is not always easy to find in the carbon shoe world.

- Fast and propulsive
- Thin, gusseted tongue
Cons
- Firm, unpadded heel collar
- Runs slightly big
KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite Fit
This is where I really noticed how thoughtfully the shoe was designed around fit. The toebox felt comfortable, not too narrow, and gave my toes enough room to spread without feeling sloppy.
The midfoot felt secure without being restrictive, and I didn’t need to over-tighten the laces to get a locked-in feel. There was no uncomfortable pressure in the arch, which I often feel in the Alphafly. My usual size of the Kipstorm Elite was slightly big, but I didn’t notice it once I started running.
Even with the amount of cushioning, the shoe felt stable and firm rather than wobbly or overly soft, which gave me confidence when changing pace or direction.
The tongue is thin and gusseted, so it couldn’t slip around during the workout. The heel is not padded and feels really firm. This made it a bit harder to get the shoe on, but it wasn’t anything bothersome during the workout.
KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite Feel
The foam is definitely on the firmer side, but in a good way. It’s not squishy or sink-in soft, it’s more of that springy, bouncy firmness that gives you energy back when you push the pace.
You can tell right away that it’s a lightweight shoe, and it never felt clunky or heavy underfoot. Every stride felt quick and responsive, especially during faster intervals.
The upper is simple and really well done. The mesh is breathable, and I loved the attached tongue and grippy laces because everything stayed locked in without having to over-tighten.
The heel cup is firm, which adds to the stability, but it also makes the shoe a little tricky to slide on at first. Once it’s on, though, it feels secure and race-ready.
What stood out the most to me was how stable I felt in the shoe. In something like the Alphafly, I sometimes feel like my ankles are working overtime to stay controlled.
In the Kipstorm Elite, I felt much more grounded and supported, especially on turns and during faster changes of pace. It still has that bouncy, fast feel of a super shoe, but with a level of stability that made me trust it more right away.
Similar Shoes to the KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite
We’ve tested a lot of carbon plated race day shoes and here are the one’s we find most similar:
-
Nike Alphafly 3– The energy return is comparable, but the Kipstorm Elite feels much more stable. In the Alphafly, I sometimes feel a little wobbly, likely due to the high stack height (40 mm vs 37 mm in the Kipstorm Elite). In the Kipstorm Elite, I felt more grounded and controlled, especially on turns and faster changes in pace.
-
Nike Vaporfly 4– The Vaporfly feels lighter and a bit more aggressive, while the Kipstorm Elite feels slightly more structured and stable. If the Vaporfly 4 is your “all-out speed” shoe, the Kipstorm Elite feels more stable throughout the midsole, which I would gravitate toward for the marathon distance.
-
Saucony Endorphin Pro – The Endorphin Pro is one of my favorite shoes for the marathon. It has a snappy, forward-rolling feel while it still provides comfort for long distances. However, the Kipstorm Elite gives more energy return in my opinion. Both are fast, but the Kipstorm Elite gives more of that stable, locked-in sensation.
Our Verdict
Overall, this shoe is going to appeal to runners who want a true carbon-plated race shoe that feels fast, frim and stable. If you love speed but also value stability and control, especially on race day, the KIPRUN Kipstorm Elite is a really strong option.
