Best Hydration Vests for Runners: Tested for Fit, Bounce, and Long Run Comfort

The best hydration vest won’t bounce around, fits comfortably, and lets you run hands-free. It might take a little trial and error to find the right one, but we promise they do exist. We’ve put together some of our favorites in the list below to help you avoid spending hours scrolling online.

You should have absolutely no shame in wearing a hydration vest. A hydrated runner is a happy runner, in my opinion.
I learned pretty quickly after moving to Colorado. The sun heats up fast, and unlike when I lived in Philadelphia, there aren’t a bunch of shops or water fountains along most trails.
I’ll admit, I used to be anti-hyration vest because I thought it would feel annoying to run with. But after a few runs, I got used to it pretty quickly.
There are a lot of options out there, so we’ve narrowed it down to some of the best choices to help you decide what might work best, whether you’re hitting the trails, heading out for a training run, or gearing up for a marathon.
Best Hydration Vest
Hydration vests can be a little tricky when it comes to fit. Sometimes they’re too snug, too loose, or they cause chafing in all the wrong places.
That’s why our team put these through real-life testing to make sure they truly stand out as some of the best hydration vests for runners.
Best All Around Hydration Vest – Nathan Pinnacle Pro 6 Liter Hydration Race Vest
The Nathan Pinnacle Pro Hydration Race Vest is a great addition to the Nathan hydration vest lineup, offering a 6L option that keeps the vest lightweight and easy to run in.
The main feature I noticed immediately in this vest is its lightweight design, as the fabric and feel felt substantially lighter and more breathable from the moment I took it out of the box. This is a really nice departure from other vests I’ve worn, which can feel dense, heavy, and almost more like a traditional school backpack versus a piece of running gear.

The Pinnacle Pro 6L has ample gear storage, including a top-loading rear pocket with two compartments, a bottom-zip pocket, two side pockets, two bottle pockets, and a front zip pocket. The front zip pocket was a little too small to hold my phone when the water bottles were full in the front, so I found this pocket better for keys, cards, and/or gels.
The pockets on the side and back are great for stuffing extra layers in the winter or any other gear you might need on your run, and there are also bungee cords at the top and bottom that can secure poles in place if you’re out on the trails.
There are two water bottles in addition to the accessible compartment for a 2L bladder in the back – these will be a matter of personal preference, but they are easy to fill up and use, and the long straws make them easily accessible on the run.
Specs
- Sizes XS-XL
- Hydration: two 20oz soft flasks
- Bladder Compatibility: up to 2L compartment in the back
- Available 2 colors
- Storage capacity: 6L

Best for Shorter Torso – Salomon Adv Skin 5L
I’ve tested out a few things from Salomon and all of their packs impress me.
It’s the ultimate hydration pack for women with narrower chests and shoulders. It Salomon Advanced Skin features a curved front and tapered 500ml soft flasks with straws. This allows for a better fit against your chest and eliminates pressure on the chest as well when cinched tight.
It can even hold an additional bladder, loads of gear, and even your cellphone, thanks to the many pouches and zippered pockets it has. You’ll also get multiple pole holder solutions for versatile options in attaching poles.

I’ve also heard from shorter runners that it felt super comfortable on their torsos. And while I am a tall runner, I have a very short torso and would 100% agree that, with some packs, they feel like they are hitting my shorts and rubbing, but I never had that issue with Salomon.
This one also had great pocket access in the front, which some smaller packs don’t. I would also say this is an outstanding choice for just about anyone.
And while it used to be on the higher end of price, now they are also right in line with everyone else.
Specs
- Sizes XS-XL
- Hydration: two 500ml soft flasks
- Bladder Compatibility: up to 2L compartment in the back
- Available 5 colors
- Storage capacity: 5L

Budget Friendly Option – Ultimate Direction Vesta
Ultimate Direction’s Adventure Vesta is ideal for a long day on the trail. It includes enough space and pockets for snacks, hydration, layers, and even a few safety items.
You get a total of 6 pockets with the Vesta. The front stretchy mesh storage can store your phone, some snacks for fuel, and even valuables. The total storage for this vest comes to 10.3L.
The Comfort Cinch technology on the Vesta provides a nice, custom fit with easy on-the-go adjustments. It includes 4-way stretch material in key places to move with you and stay nice and snug. With the sliding rail sternum and waist straps, you’re bound to find a good fit.

It even has a new, redesigned trekking pole holder for your next trail run. It minimizes bounce and snaps out of the way when you’re not using it.
I’ve also run with this pack and again, as I mentioned above, it has tons of pockets. But I didn’t like that I needed to buy the bladder separately.
However, it’s a favorite among many of my runner friends who want to be able to take off jackets or gear as the weather changes.
It has more room in the pack to carry things, which makes it ideal for more trail running days where you need extra fuel and the weather is often changing on you.
Specs
- Sizes SM-L
- Hydration: two 17oz soft flasks
- Bladder Compatibility: 500ml
- Available 2 colors

Ready for the Trails – North Face Summit Series Run Vest 10
This lightweight, breathable vest with pockets in all the right sizes The North Face Summit Series Run Vest 10 tops my list of trail vests.
Luckily I was able to test the Summit Series Run Vest 10 in my full range of running clothes from winter puffy jacket to tank top and sports bra in one week in Colorado. I’m also the person who takes my vest on every run so it was used on everything from 3 to 17 miles.
Let’s start with all the pockets. This is what I want in a vest. Two front pockets for flasks, but honestly I use one of these for my phone on the everyday runs and my phone actually fits because of the zipper to expand the size of these pockets.
A secured zipper pocket, I know I’m not losing my keys. And finally, two lower chest pockets, for me that means one for dog treats, one stuffed with gels or gummy clusters. Plus a divider in the large back pocket to keep everything separate.
Available in 5 sizes meant that this pack actually fit my x-small frame with no gaps at the bottom, it was snug enough to not bounce without needing to tighten every strap down the maximum amount, and I was finally able to get bungee straps across the chest to fit.
Specs
- Sizes XS-XL
- Hydration: two 500ml soft flasks
- Bladder Compatibility: yes, a compartment in the back
- Available 2 color
- Storage capacity: 10L
- Check it out from Rei.com for $159
What’s the Difference Between Hydration Vest vs. Hydration Pack?
You might be wondering what the difference is between a hydration vest and a hydration pack. Honestly, I had the same question at first.
The two are often used interchangeably, but there is a small difference.
A hydration vest fits snug against your body and is lightweight, which helps reduce bounce while you’re running. You’ll usually see bottles in the front, making it easy to grab a drink without slowing down.
A hydration pack, on the other hand, is more like a small backpack with a hydration bladder and tube. These tend to offer more storage for things like gels, layers, or extra gear, which can make them a good option for longer trail runs and ultras.
Like any other piece of clothing or piece of gear, the best running vest is one that fits your body and meets your needs. There is no single ‘most comfortable’ vest, as what suits one runner may not fit another properly, or may not fit your body.
